The stories we tell can get in the way of listening.
As leaders, we set the example; that example is our leadership legacy.
Listening is the key to great leaders. We need to understand those around us and listen entirely. This requires us to get out of our heads and the stories we tell ourselves.
First, we have to identify the stories that hold us back that create barriers to listening. Then we need to implement techniques to listen and let the other person know we heard them.
Try this technique:
When you are talking with someone, you want to make sure you heard them correctly or want to make sure they know you heard them. Repeat back to them what they said, ask for clarification, and that this is what you heard. Give them the space to correct what you heard or their words for clarity, then repeat that back until you agree on the conversation.
Do this out of respect and listen, not belittle or make fun; it lets the person know you genuinely want to understand and that you want them to know you heard them.
This is a powerful process, and if you do this correctly and consistently (of course not constantly), you are setting an example that listening and understanding are important to you.
As leaders, we need our teams to feel listened to, and we need to make sure our directions are clear and understood.
